Looking for a drill to stay sharp over this off-season? This drill is great for those of you who struggle with swinging "over the top" and slicing. While there may be other macro issues leading to that downswing, this drill helps replicate the feeling of the right shoulder working underneath or below the left shoulder in transition and during the downswing.
The "over the top" move is represented by a right shoulder that is above the left shoulder during the downswing. This leads to a path that is overly left (for a right-handed golfer). It also becomes difficult to manage the clubface correctly.
To perform this drill properly, rest your forehead against a flat surface (preferably a wall) from a golf posture. The toe line, hip line, and shoulder line should all be parallel to the wall. From this position lower the right so that it is beneath the left. Remember, at the address position, your right hand is lower than your left so your shoulders should reflect that as well. Now that we're in the proper posture, rotate to your backswing. Once complete, start your downswing. The only thing that should contact the wall should be your forehead. If you miss the wall with your hands and shoulders you have succeeded!
CHALLENGE: Try taking your hands inside from the setup position. Notice how this sets a chain reaction that leads to the "over the top" downswing. Try the drill in one fluid motion with this takeaway and notice how hard it would be to NOT hit the wall.
I hope this was helpful and as always if you have any questions please reach out! Happy New Year!
